DID YOU KNOW?
The average child in foster care moves 7 times before the age of 18. Most of the time, these children are moving place to place carrying only a garbage bag. Our friend and team member, Hillary Nichols, has created a project called Operation South Jersey that focuses on creating drives to benefit our community. Her most recent drive, “Duffel Bags for Foster Kids,” will benefit the youth we currently serve. She tells us, “My goal is to eliminate trash bags as an acceptable form of luggage for the 180 children we serve at CASA of CGS. Most times, when children are taken from their home, they don’t have time to grab necessities such as a toothbrush, favorite toy, or change of clothes.”
Court Appointed Special Advocates of Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem Counties (CASA of CGS), is a non profit that recruits and trains community volunteers to be a “voice in court” for children removed from their homes due to abuse and/or neglect and placed into foster care. The CASA advocates “speak up” for these children, helping them to get the services they need and ensure that they find safe, permanent homes. Once the duffel bags are created, the CASA advocates will give the duffel bags to the children they speak up for.
